Hay Fever: What Really Works

Mustafa Ameer · 05 April 2024

Hay fever affects around one in four adults in the UK. If pollen leaves you sneezing, itchy and unable to sleep, a structured plan usually works better than picking up random products.

Step one: antihistamines

Non-drowsy antihistamines such as cetirizine, loratadine or fexofenadine are the first line for most people. Start them a couple of weeks before your usual symptoms begin and take daily through the season.

Step two: nasal sprays

Steroid nasal sprays are the most effective single treatment for a blocked or runny nose. They take a few days to build up, so consistent daily use is key.

Eye symptoms

  • Antihistamine eye drops for itching and redness
  • Wraparound sunglasses on high pollen days
  • A dab of Vaseline around the nostrils to trap pollen
Most hay fever misery comes from using the wrong treatment, not from a lack of options.

Hay fever is covered by the NHS Common Ailments Service in Wales for eligible patients. If you are still struggling, speak to our pharmacist for an assessment, suitable treatment or referral when needed.
